About Glen Dawson

About 10 years ago, I felt it would be fun to work with wood and turning it on a lathe intrigued me. The resulting lathe purchase and collecting of wood from local trees that had fallen or been cut down, started me on a creative path. The wood was far too beautiful to use as firewood or fill a landfill. So, my wood turning interest turned into a reality.

Friends gave me logs from newly cut trees on their property, and I found many different types of trees that people had taken down during landscaping work on their property. They were happy to have someone pick up the logs and take them away.  A wood inventory of maple, cherry, walnut, apple, sumac and others started building up in my storage shed.

For the last 10 years, after my 9-5 job, I squeezed in turning time whenever I could—especially during our cold winters here in Ontario, Canada.

I really enjoy saving the wood and turning it into something unique that someone will enjoy. After mounting a piece and turning it on the lathe, it is fun to see what the wood decides it wants to be. All kinds of unique wine glass stems of all different lengths (dad loves his tall one with a big base, to put on the ground next to his lawn chair), coffee grinders, bread boards, bowls, vases, decorative pieces, clocks, letter openers, and more, reveal themselves.

I don’t really plan the outcome of the piece.  I just mount a piece of the tree and start turning, letting the wood decide what it wants to be. Each piece begs me to reveal all the breathtaking grains hidden inside. Experimenting with different techniques and finishes, results in some really interesting and unique pieces.

For years, I have been giving my authentic creations as gifts to family and friends.

I also have fun creating unique items from car parts and other broken/discarded things. My daughter enjoys a few lamps made from parts from her many vehicles. It’s a great way to memorialize the car and keep the memory forever.

As a result of inquiries from many people, I have created this website to bring wood-loving buyers and my creations together. Each piece is unique and looking for an owner who resonates with it who will not only display it, but also enjoy Mother Natures beauty revealed in the finished piece, giving the transformed tree life for years to come.

I am looking forward to filling this site with many new unique wood creations.
